Transportation

Bus
Buses are one of the inexpensive way
s to travel in Malaysia. Most of the buses in Kuala Lumpur (KL) are air-conditioned, but there are still non-air-conditioned buses in smaller towns around the country. Buses plying routes within towns and cities typically charge fares according to the distance covered while interstate buses have fixed rates.

Kuala Lumpur's main bus terminal is Puduraya Bus Terminal where the northbound and southbound buses pick up and drop off.  It is conveniently located just 10 minutes walk from Bukit Bintang. However, advance booking is required during eve of two such public holidays in Malaysia (Hari Raya and Chinese New Year) as many city folks will go 'balik kampung' (back hometown) to visit their families and relatives over these holidays.

Even with extra buses hired for this exodus, tickets are snapped up like 'hot cakes' and seats are fully booked. Hence advance booking is required during this period.

City and sub-urban bus company is : Rapid KL  ( http://www.rapidkl.com.my )

Taxi
Taxis are usually fitted with meters in major cities. In KL, the rate is currently RM2 for the first
two kilometres, and 10 cents for every subsequent 200 metres (subject to change). However, most taxis are not going by metres lately, hence please check out the approximate prices for standard routes before arriving into KL. A 50% surcharge is levied between midnight and 6 am. Additional RM1.00 is charged for telephone booking, 3rd adult passenger (max 4) and/or baggage stored in boot. Interstate and smaller town taxis charge a fixed rate and it is best to settle on a price before getting into the taxi.

Guidelines On Hiring Taxis

  • Passengers have the right to object if the taxi driver stops to pick up other passengers along the way.
  • Outside the city, as well as in other parts of Malaysia, taxis operate on a fixed rate depending on the distance.
  • The Airport limousine taxis (budget or premier) at the LCCT or KLIA operate using a prepaid coupon system. Passengers are advised to purchase the coupon at the taxi counters.
  • To get to LCCT from the Kuala Lumpur city, flag down any cab but be prepared to negotiate. Most taxis wil quote a lump sum instead of using the meter as they claim the higher fare is to cover for the empty trip back since they are not allowed to pick up passengers in the vicinity of the airport. Best to call for a radio cab in advance. Travelling time to and from the heart of the city is about one hour when there is no traffic congestion.
  • Be warned that some taxi drivers think they can also operate a low-cost carrier. They will take a "long cut" through the Nilai boondocks, scaring the daylight out of female passengers traveling alone. These cabbies (who failed mathematic) are trying to save on toll charges. Insist on taking the direct route as there are no savings in fare or time for the passenger.
  • Never talk to the touts when you arrive at KLIA. There are plenty of touts that come and approach you. Excuse yourself nicely and go straight to taxi counter to buy the ticket or you can opt for KLIA express for RM35 each way.
  • Never take the taxi that is waiting at the taxi stop especially at top tourist spots. Find a good spot beside of the road to stop a taxi. Taxi driver earn when they move around to pick passenger but not waiting for passenger. They are willing to wait in order to charge higher.
  • Always ask the taxi driver to use the meter. If they refuse, just step out of the taxi and wait for another taxi. It is illegal to charge passenger without using the meter.
  • Before travel using taxi in KL, make sure you check with your map; how far is your destination so you can estimate your journey. You don't want the taxi driver taking you in circles before sending you to your destination. Rule of thumb, anywhere in KL must not exceed RM20.
  • All taxi drivers are compulsory to wear clean white shirt, tug in, clean taxi and display your picture, name and taxi number in front of the passenger seat. If you find it differently, just step out and wait for another taxi.

Air Travel
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is Malaysia
's primary state-of-the-art gateway. It is located in Sepang, which is about 50km (approximately an hour's drive via highway) south of Kuala Lumpur.

There are also some domestic budget airlines in Malaysia like Air Asia and Berjaya Air that ply popular holiday routes such as KL-Pulau Tioman, KL-Pulau Langkawi and so on. However, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is the country's very own international carrier, which flies to over 100 destinations across six continents.

www.fireflyz.com.my -  a new community budget airline (operated by MAS) flies to and fro from Penang International Airport and Subang Airport (near Kuala Lumpur) to nearby popular destinations like Langkawi, Koh Samui, Phuket, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Bharu (nearest airport to Perhentian Island) and Kuantan.

Visitors are able to get to the heart of KL by bus, airport taxi, KLIA Ekspres or rent-a-car services available from KLIA.
